Sunday Club Lent 2003
We are celebrating the beginning of Lent when we are concentrating on trying to give some things up so that we can change and become more like Jesus.
Last week, the Lions Group at Sunday Club talked about what sort of things they could give up for Lent and what they should take on in its place. Here are some of their ideas.
We wanted to stop being impatient.
And be more patient and tolerant with each other.
We wanted to stop annoying our brothers, sisters and friends.
And be kind to one another instead.
We wanted to stop being couch potatoes, watching television all the time,
And be more active, getting fresh air.
We wanted to give up taking without asking,
And try giving help instead.
We wanted to give up excluding people and leaving them out
And try especially hard to let people join in.
We wanted to give up being greedy
And think about those who don’t have enough to eat.
The Lions Group have chosen the charity USPG to support during Lent. We thought this would be a good idea because recently a lady came to talk to us about the good work that USPG is doing in India.
The particular project that we are going to support is based in Delhi. The charity reaches out to people who are excluded and poor and live in the slums of Delhi. They try to meet the needs of these people by helping them to become self sufficient and start feeling better about themselves.
The aim of this project in India is summed up in the words of one of the mission workers,
“The elderly and the young challenge us to make each phase of our human life meaningful - the beginning and the end of the human story.”
Please help us to support these people in India by giving generously during Lent.
Thank you.
We pray:
Dear Father God
As we are in Lent, and getting closer and closer to Easter, help us to try and give up our greed.
Help us to be less selfish and to be more like Jesus and to get closer to you.
Help us to think about people who don’t have food or water or people who don’t have a home.
We pray especially for the charity we are supporting in Lent.
We ask our prayers in the name of your Son Jesus Christ,
AMEN
