About the school

Bishop Gilpin school is a voluntary aided, co-educational Church of England Primary School. We are in the Diocese of Southwark, within the local authority of the London Borough of Merton.

The school was founded over two hundred years ago, in 1758, in a building which still exists on the edge of Wimbledon Common. The school moved to its present site in 1966. The addition of a nursery unit in 1991 allows the school to cater for children under five years old. The school is housed in a modern single storey building set in two acres of rising ground. Extensive grassed sports facilities are shared with the neighbouring secondary school.

Within the immediate vicinity of the school buildings there are three main play areas for nursery, lower and upper school children. There is also an adventure play area in the wooded part of the school site. The main building comprises eight classrooms, a library, a dining room, a hall, a teachers’ resources room, a staff room and office accommodation. The new teaching block accommodates 5, 6 and 7 year olds. The main building houses 8, 9, 10 and 11 year olds. There is a new ICT suite as well as a larger school hall.

The school admits 60 children into the reception classes and there are no more than 30 children in each of the other classes. There is a close relationship with St Mary’s and St Mark’s churches and clergy visit the school regularly.
